Air Filter Installation In Baltimore, MDAir filter installation in Baltimore, Lutherville-Timonium, Ellicott City, MD and the surrounding areas is a simple and streamlined process thanks to the modern technology that we have at hand. So let’s talk about the types of air filters you can choose from and which one is perfect for you!

Let’s Talk Efficiency

No air filter installation process could be complete if you didn’t know anything about your unit’s efficiency. And when we say efficiency in air filters we say MERV. Simply put, if you see a MERV of 1 on any general HVAC unit, it means it’s the least efficient possible. While a MERV of 16 has the highest efficiency on the market. It’s important to point out that according to the ASHRAE Standard 62.1 the acceptable ventilation for indoor air quality would be a MERV of 6.

Types of Air Filters According to MERV

Flat panel filters

This technology is quite old and now only used by some commercial buildings. Flat-panel filters have filter media comprising high-loft nonwovens or spun glass and is often referred to as throw-away filters. These filters have a MERV of 5 as far as efficiency goes.

Pleated filters

made of synthetic fabrics or cotton and polyester. The filters have a MERV of 6 to 11 and a larger surface then the ones above. Pleated filters are commonly used in commercial buildings rather than in residential. They also have a filter media depth of 1, 2, and sometimes 4.

Extended-surface filters

Here’s another type of filter that are made of fiber glass, just like the ones above or a blend of fiber glass and some cellulose. Their media depth is of 12 inches and they have a MERV of 15 up to 15.

HEPA filters

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. They are capable of capturing a whole plethora of pollutants, including very small particles. HEPA filters do not have a MERV rating as they actually go above the ASHRAE test protocol 62.1 which they use to determine what we call MERV ratings.
