Ductwork Replacement vs Repair – Which One Do I Need?

Duct Replacement In Baltimore, MDDuctwork replacement in Baltimore, Lutherville-Timonium, Ellicott City, MD and the surrounding areas comes up quite a lot during our conversations with our clients. They ask us if they really need to replace all their ductwork altogether or if they could get away with a simple repair. Let’s answer that question!

Good Ductwork Is Crucial for a House

The first thing you need to understand is that the ductwork is highly important for your house. Your HVAC unit will only be as effective as your ductwork is and even the best one on the market will fail efficiency-wise if your ductwork is poor and old.

In other words, if your ductwork is not running properly, some 20 or 30% of all the cool or hot air that’s supposed to run into your house will actually be lost in the attic. The air conditioner itself might break down sooner because of an inefficient duct system.

We recommend a ductwork replacement if it’s too old and is now putting a strain on your unit.

Ductwork Replacement vs Repair

Once you’ve determined that your ductwork is faulty, you will have to choose between repairing it and replacing it altogether. If you can still perform a few good repairs, do them. There’s no need to go for a replacement which is pricier.

However, there are a few situations in which a ductwork replacement is absolutely necessary.

  • Your ducts are made of very cheap materials. This could mean they will break down multiple times and will end up costing a lot more than the replacement
  • The system is older than 10 or 15 years. This is usually the breaking point when every ductwork starts to slowly deteriorate.
  • You’ve discovered the plastic ducts are covered in mold. Cleaning them is not a solution in this case. But if they are made of metal, you can get them professionally cleaned.

Which is where we come in. If you want your ducts professionally repaired or if you’re thinking about a ductwork replacement, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
