Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why did my furnace stop working?
There are a couple of reasons your furnace will cause problems or stop working. The first to check out is the filter. Dirty filters can cause furnace problems, even though it wouldn’t seem like a big deal. It is! Also, the thermostat can have issues. Have you checked the battery? Another thing to consider with your thermostat is to check your settings. Is the heat set properly? One last thing worth checking is if your power switch or circuit breaker went out. If it’s tripped, it can cause problems.
What can I do if my furnace stops working?
Step 1. First, check your thermostat. Is it set to “on” and the “heat” setting?
Step 2. Make sure your furnace is also set to the “on” position.
Step 3. It’s easy to overthink a circuit breaker. Check and make sure it didn’t trip.
Step 4. Is your furnace filter clogged? It might be time to replace it with a new filter.
Step 5. On the front of your furnace is a panel. Is it shut properly and secured?
Step 6. Did you look to make sure that the gas valve is set to the “on” position?
Step 7. Are your air ducts blocked?
Step 8. If it’s still not working? It’s time to call a professional.
How long will a furnace last?
A natural gas furnace vs. an oil furnace have different answers. The lifespan for a gas furnace runs about 15-20 years, while an oil furnace has a lifespan of approximately 15-25 years. Now, this is when you’ve done well to properly care and maintain the furnace. The lifespan is extended based on how well you maintained the unit.
Is it smarter to replace or repair your furnace?
How old is the furnace? This is an important point to consider. How often are you doing repairs? We go by the $5000 rule. So, to do this, consider the age of the furnace. Now, multiply that by the cost of repair per year. Got your number? Okay, if that number is less than $5000, we say repair it. For example, say your furnace is around 12 years old, how much will the repair cost you? $500? Okay, now let’s multiply 12x500. That total $6000, which is bigger than $5000. In that case, it’s better to replace it.
Can you tell me how much it costs to repair a furnace?
This is a tricky question. There are different answers, and it can vary as much as $100 to $1200 dollars. The average cost tends to be right around $300. In most scenarios, it tends to run between $170 to $500, dependent on the type of furnace you have, if there’s a warranty, along with the parts and labor needed.
When should I get my furnace serviced?
We suggest having your furnace looked at and serviced before it gets cold. If you do this once a year, you’ll find that it both runs more efficiently, and it helps with your warranty should something go wrong. Manufacturers recommend annual inspections and maintenance. With this in mind, be aware that if there’s a problem, they’ll want to see proof you’ve kept up with maintenance. Another reason to maintain your unit is that it works better and prolongs the life of the furnace.
How much does it cost to install central air conditioning?
If you’re looking into the cost of installing central air conditioning, expect to pay somewhere in the range of $3,700 to $7000, though it can vary based on where you live, what your existing ducts are like, and based on the system you need. This information comes from HomeAdvisor.
What size air conditioner do I need for a 2000 square foot house?
While there’s a general rule of thumb, unfortunately it’s not always accurate. There are many things to consider when choosing the right size air conditioner. It’s actually a big complicated, but with the right tools, and taking into account certain factors, you’ll soon know what size unit you’ll need. We’ll consider things like how many windows and doors you have, and even what type, along with the number of people living there, ceiling height, and more. A trained HVAC contractor can help you learn more.
When should I replace my air conditioner?
Most AC units get about 12-15 years out of them when they’re properly maintained and installed. Heat pumps have a lifespan of about 14 years. Again, maintenance is important as it extends the life of the units. One thing to consider is if your unit is over 10 years old, it may make sense to replace it rather than going through the hassle of repairs.
Why is my AC blowing warm air?
When it comes to air conditioning units not cooling your home, there are a few things to check. First, is your unit set to cool, and your fan set to auto? If that’s not the issue, it could be anything from faulty wiring to dirty air filters to refrigerant leaks. Other issues can be a frozen evaporator coil or a dirty condenser coil. There are multiple things to consider, but the simplest to check are the most basic, such as your thermostat setting.
How do I fix my AC leak in my house?
The good news is that sometimes it’s a simple fix. If your drain line is clogged, a wet/dry vac can help you out. Clean the line with an attachment, and this may help. Also, for future reference, consider using a small amount of vinegar to keep bacteria and fungus at bay. You’ll pour the vinegar down the line 2-3 times a year in this instance.
How often should AC be tuned up?
The smartest way to keep your AC system working efficiently is having it serviced or tuned up. It’s important that you do this in the spring, before heavy usage. In fact, by not servicing it, you lose 5% efficiently each year. That also goes for your heating system, too. If you want your home to be cooled efficiently, a well-maintained system is key. One last note, don’t forget to clean or replace your air filter regularly. We suggest once a month.
