Types of Fireplaces
Wood Burning Fireplaces
Wood burning fireplaces are the classic yet most traditional type of fireplace. Depending on the build, they usually have either an open hearth or a closed combustion stove. As the wood sets on fire, there comes out a cracking sound of wood being burnt which gives quite an ambient feeling to many people. However, there is a risk involved as these types of fireplaces produce flying embers as well as hazardous smoke.
In gas fireplaces, artificial logs with pebbles, embers, and glass fire crystals are enclosed within a glass panel. They are considered to be an economical and efficient type of fireplaces. Once you get the one, make sure to get into the proper gas fireplace maintenance and regular gas fireplace inspection and repair.
Electric fireplaces are a rather modern yet more easy type of fireplace to install and use. Not only are they cost-effective but also provide a sufficient amount of heat to the place where they are installed. They light-up electrically and comes in various models. For smooth operations, it is recommended to pay great head to electric fireplace inspection, repair, and regular electric fireplace maintenance.
How to Light a Gas Fireplace?
A gas fireplace is known for producing significant heat, along with a convenient process to light up. Want to know how to start a gas furnace?Following are the steps to turn on a gas fireplace:
- Remove the fireplace cover.
- Locate a fireplace key and insert it into the gas valve of the fireplace which can either be on the right or left side of the fireplace.
- Before turning the gas valve knob, make sure to have a lighter with enough head so that hands can be kept at a safe distance from the fire pit.
- Put the lighter’s head close to the fireplace burner and trigger the lighter fuel.
- Once the lighter is activated, turn the gas valve knob in a counter-clockwise direction to about half a turn.
- As soon as gas reaches the fireplace, the pilot will ignite and so does the fireplace.
- Once the pilot is lit, adjust the gas valve as per requirement.
- To make sure that excess gas does not escape into the room, immediately cover the fireplace with the front panel removed in step 1.
Common Problems in Gas Fireplace
Burner plate clogging
Over time, the holes in the burner plat can get clogged with the carbon. This problem won’t let gas reach the pilot light properly. However, this problem can be fixed by turning off the pilot and closing the gas valve. Afterward, blow the holes through compressed air. This will remove the carbon residue and so does any clogging.
The pilot light isn’t staying lit
In case pilot light first gets activated and then goes out after some time, then it surely means that the thermocouple is malfunctioning. This is one of the gross problems that may occur in the gas fireplace. Fortunately, this problem can easily be fixed by changing the thermocouple.
Sound from the blower
The blower sound is another common problem in gas fireplaces, where they start to emit bizarre sounds like a grind, roar, or shriek. In such situations, the blower is the one that is malfunctioning and needs to be repaired or replaced.
Common Problems in Electric Fireplace
Pilot light is activated but the fireplace isn’t igniting
In case the pilot light is activated, but still, the fireplace isn’t igniting, then the problem is primarily with the thermopiles. Thermopiles are the round small metal piles that open up the way for electricity to reach the fireplace’s gas chamber. So, in such conditions, just simply disconnect the probe from the burner, remove, and replace it with the new thermopile.
Electric fireplace keeps beeping
In a situation where an electric fireplace keeps on beeping, be sure that something isn’t working properly and it requires a thorough inspection. For a quick remedy, try replacing the batteries of the remote control unit. If the problem persists then make sure that the fireplace’s inlet and outlet aren’t blocked and that fireplace components are clean.
Electric fireplace keeps shutting off
In the case where an electric fireplace is consistently shutting off, there can be two major issues. The first issue is that there are chances that the setpoint is set near to room temperature or not adequately set to a considerable value. So, as soon as the thermostat reaches that setpoint, it turns off the fireplace. To fix this, consider setting the thermostat at a considerable value. The second issue could be the fireplace getting overheated. Since an electric fireplace comes with overheating protection, so once any such condition exists, it turns off the electric fireplace to fix device burn out or short circuit. To fix this, let the fireplace stay idle for some time and once it is cooled down, turn on the fireplace again.
Maintenance/Inspection of Gas Fireplace
Gas furnace needs to be inspected annually to remove any clogging. Moreover, an inspection of the chimney, fuel lining, and thermocouple should at least be done once in a year, and where required timely fireplace repair should be done so that no disruption should be experienced during the peak time of winters.
